How to Install Kitchen Cabinets Video
I searched for a while, and this is the best video I could find on installing kitchen cabinets. It's a time lapse video of the installation so read through these pointers as you watch the video.
Prior to watching the cabinet installation video, and the first thing you should do is look at the plans and find out where each cabinet is going. You might want to number them, (most are numbered on the plans too) and maybe write the number on the wall where it's not visible. The best tip of all is to have someone help you. Even if they have no idea what they are doing, it's nice to have the cabinet held while you are screwing into the studs.
TOOLS YOU'LL NEED
Cordless drill(s) (two are nice, one for drilling, one for screwing)
4 foot level
Clamps
Framing Square
Stud Finder
Pencil
1" Paddle bit 3" or more hole saw or Jig Saw
SUPPLIES
2.5 to 3.5 inch screws to anchor cabinet to wall
1 inch screws to hold cabinets together
wood shims
1.Inspect the room. Determine how plumb the walls are you are working with, and how square the corners are, and how level the floor is. These will help you understand where you will need to shim the cabinets.
2.Locate the studs on the walls. You can do this with a stud finder.
3.Mark the finish height of the first cabinet on the wall so you have a reference when you are screwing it in.
4.Begin installing the cabinets. It's best to start with the ones that hang off the wall because you will not have anything obstructing. It's good to start in a corner and work your way out. If the walls are not plumb, (vertically level) you may need to shim the back of cabinet while you are screwing it in. Make sure you screw into the studs!!
5.Using your level, and top of the first cabinet as reference, mark the height of the second cabinet on the wall where you can see it while your installing the cabinet. This assumes your cabinets are level on top, it not disregard this step.
6.You may want to clamp the first and second cabinets together, or have your helper hold the cabinets tight. Using a screw length that will not penetrate the second cabinet, screw from the inside of one cabinet into the side of the other. It's a good idea to pre-drill the hole using a drill bit, so the screw gets more grab and pulls the cabinets together.
7.Repeat step six for all the hanging cabinets, and make sure you screw all the cabinets into the studs.
8.The cabinets that rest on the floor are much easier. You can just level them, and set them into place and screw them into the studs.
9.Again start in the corner. Level the cabinet from back to front. You may need to shim the cabinet to get it level if your floor is uneven. Next level the cabinet from side to side, shim if needed. Now screw it into the wall.
10. Line up the next cabinet, level and plumb, and screw the cabinets together like you did on the hanging cabinets. If you can see the shims on the bottom of the cabinets, don't worry. Usually there is a kick plate that you will install last to hide the bottom.
***At some point you will probably need to cut or drill holes for the sink water supply and drain. Install the cabinet prior to the cabinet that is to be drilled, then measure from the finish edge of the that cabinet, to the center of the pipes. Transcribe those measurements on to the cabinet that will be installed. You may need to cut a bigger hole if the supply lines have valves on them.
11. You may need to install crown modeling around the top and the kick plate on the bottom.
12. That's the end of the cabinets. Counter tops are a different lesson and video.
